<正>The bacterial phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP):sugar phosphotransferase system (PTS) mediates the active transport and concomitant phosphorylation of carbohydrates. In addition to its function in carbohydrate uptake and phosphorylation, the membrane-located components (ManY/IIC and ManZ/IID) of the mannose family (man-PTS) complex exhibit two additional apparently unrelated activities:1) gates for the penetration of bacteriophageλDNA across the inner membrane of Escherichia coli, 2) target receptors for class II bacteriocins, a potential alternative to antibiotics.
