A Reconsideration of the Relationship between Conotubus and Cloudina in Southern Shaanxi: New Evidence from Geometric Morphometry

There is a rapid evolution of global organisms in the late Ediacaran, especially Cloudina, the earliest and widely distributed mineralized skeletal organism in the world, indicating that the early biological evolution has entered a new era,. Cloudina is considered to be an important index fossil of the terminal Ediacaran. The Gaojiashan Lagerst?tte, located in the Northwestern of the Yangtze Plat, contains a great diversity of well-preserved phosphatized Cloudina, which was supposed to be the index fossil of the terminal Ediacaran. Pyritized Conotubus was one of the highly representative fossil preserved in the Gaojiashan Lagerst?tte. The internal structure also could be distinguished with the help of industrial computerized tomography(CT) technique. Furthermore, pyritized Conotubus was also discovered in Esmeralda section of Deep Spring Formation, Nevada, USA, suggesting that Conotubus distributed extensively. Previous researchers compared the morphology of Conotubus and Cloudina, and considered that Conotubus has a close affinity to Cloudina. Recently, the CT technology, which was nondestructive testing technology to samples, was used to explore the growth characteristics of Conotubus. The CT results showed delicate details and intact morphology of Conotubus. It is generally assumed that Conotubus and Cloudina budding from the sicula. Therefore, in this thesis, 26 Cloudina sicula and 21 Conotubus sicula were chosen as the research object for geometric morphological analysis. Two landmarks were demarcated at the tubular fossil’s orifice, besides, 20 and 5 semilandmarks were demarcated in the fossil body part. The results showed that there was no significant difference between Conotubus and Cloudina, which means Conotubus and Cloudina have similar budding reproduction pattern. The Gaojiashan Lagerst?tte, where the strata deposited conformed, contains continually evolving fossils in the late Ediacaran help to explore the evolutionary mechanism of nature. Meanwhile, the geometric morphometrics result of Conotubus and Cloudina provide a strong support for Gaojiashan Lagerst?tte to apply the GSSP.
